Feeling overwhelmed? Support is closer than you think.

Anyone else having times of overwhelm lately?  I am guessing there are others struggling in some form or another, some may also be facing added stressors. I doubt I'm on my own here. Stressors can arrive unwelcome in many forms from a global pandemic to unforeseen issues closer to home. Below are some resources that I draw upon. Take whatever may be helpful, or let me know of your favourites so I can add to the list to support others.

Tapping into our resources is a great way to manage stress.  When we feel powerless at things we cannot control, nurturing our self is a choice within our control. Our outlook is often improved, even if our circumstances stay the same.  Our resilience is strengthened.  As a result, outward circumstances may have a lesser impact on us.

Reflective questions

  • Am I telling myself that my life should be stress-free? Does this situation mean the end of my peace, or is it a bump in the road where I can use resources to work through?

  • Am I trying to handle this difficulty on my own? What do I need from others? Where can I access this resource? Who do I need to talk to?

 Stress reducing activities

Which stress reducing activities work for you?  Check out this list or add your own to help others.

  • Going for a walk. Can this be factored in to your work break or another time?

  • Deep breathing or grounding techniques

  • Quality time with others

  • Affirming self-talk

  • Questioning the truth of any negative inner talk about your worth and value

  • Listening to your favourite music

  • Enjoying your favourite food or drink (in healthy proportions for your wellbeing, overindulging can make your symptoms worse)

  • Relaxing bath

  • Visiting your favourite place

  • Enjoying a good belly laugh

  • Physical activity - sport, games, dancing

  • Spiritual activity – prayer, reflection, faith community services

  • Accessing support services – peer support, your workplace Employee Assistance Program, counsellor or psychologist, your doctor.

What steps can you take to introduce at least one of these activities into your life?

Self-assessment questions

  •  Am I getting enough sleep? What can I do to improve this? Are there resources I can access?

  •  Which beliefs and values are important to me? Realising and living according to our values can offer us a peace that can buoy us during stressful times.

Giving yourself compassion and understanding can instantly lower your stress level.  Acknowledging that the situation is hard, and accessing your resources within your control strengthens your resilience, hope and peace.

Go gently, Melanie
